Browser--program used to access and display web pages--you are viewing this web site in a browser. The two most popular programs are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. |

CGI--'Common Gateway Interface'. A way to allow users to provide information to scripts attached to web pages, usually through forms. |

Cyberspace--a metaphor for the imaginery space that internet users move around in. |

Domain Names--The address web surfers use to find your web site. Computers connected to the Internet use IP (Internet Protocol) numbers (e.g.122.344.55.56) to locate other computers. It would be difficult to remember these long strings of numbers to locate a site, so domain names were developed to translate IP numbers into easily remembered names. |

Editors--programs used to create HTML files. For example FrontPage and Claris Works are popular editors. |

FTP--'File Transfer Protocol'. This program will transfer (upload) files from your computer's hard drive to an internet server. Examples of these programs are WS_FTP and Fetch. |

GIF--'Graphics Interchange Format'. A popular format for image files. |

Hex--colors codes in HTML that are made up of mathematical combinations of shades (44, 02, 35) and double letters (like GG or CC). |

HTML--'HyperText Markup Language'.This is the language used to write web pages and sites. |

Hypertext Link--documents joined by links within a web site so that visitors can read them in any order. |

JPEG--'Join Photgraphic Experts Group'. Most used cross-platform for image files. |

Server--is a computer that can be accessed via the internet. All web sites reside on a server. After you've coded your site on your hard drive you then transfer you site to a server. |

URL--'Uniform Resource Locator'. This is the address of any site on the internet. Example - http://www.yournamefree.com |

WWW--The 'World Wide Web' is a huge collection of computers linked together in a network. They communicate with each other by sending data. |
